Gandalf and I took some time today to make a quick hike up to the Travertine Falls.

The weather wasn’t really the best for a hike. Low 30’s with a dusting of snow. However, it was a good hike and we had fun. For our first hike together it was a good one.

Had to make Gandalf slow up.

Had to make Gandalf slow up.

The only issue we had was Gandalf really wanted to go faster than I. Once he was off leash I had to keep telling him to sit and wait.

Come on! Let's go already.

The falls themselves were pretty non existent this time of year. But the hike was worth it.

All in all a nice little one our hike. The views coming back down were pretty nice.

Some things I did learn. I’ll need to figure out my blood sugars better when hiking. I started with a blood sugar of 255 an hour before the hike. Took my insulin for it. At the turn around point 30+ minutes into the hike my blood sugars were 127 (where they should be if I were somewhere normal). So, to be safe I ate my only candy bar and Gandalf and I turned around to head back down the mountain. Now, don’t get me wrong, Gandalf is a great dog, but Lassie he isn’t. If I fall over in a diabetic coma up on the mountain, well, I’d be screwed. He would go play, not get help. 🙂

Anothing thing I learned. Keep my blood sugar meter in my jacket not the back pack. It got too cold and wouldn’t work until I warmed it up in my inner jacket pocket.  Next time I’ll take a couple of candy bars and some Cliff bars to munch on. Better safe than dead.

When we got back to the car my blood sugars had spiked to 290. Not sure why that happened. Usually exercise will drop my BS’s and a candy bar keeps it about right. An hour later my BS’s were 167. So, I’ve bounced a bit. Will need to figure that out if I get to taking this hiking thing seriously.
