Nora is turning into a pretty good Graphics Artist. She has set up a Google+ page called “The Daily Digital Doodle”

Life

She’s using Maya, Gimp, and Photoshop mainly.

I grabbed a few of the examples from her Google+ page. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

For various reasons I have not been enjoying my life here in Monterey California. Not because it isn’t beautiful and people come from hundreds of miles away to spend a weekend here.  I have lived here for several years and have grown very blase about it, so I’m going to try and change things up. I’ve started a Monterey Living Daily picture on Facebook.

I think I might try something similar here. Probably not daily, but often, I will post a random picture I’ve taken here in the Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel area.

Today’s picture comes from my ride in this morning. It’s the boats out in the bay between the Coast Guard Pier (Breakwater Cove), and Old Fisherman’s Warf. This is from about 7:30 this morning.  You can see Seaside/Sand City across the bay. Not a bad view on my commute to work.

Well,

I’m back to trying to get into shape again. Over the last year I’ve dropped 25 pounds. I went from 215 to 190. It’s amazing what going through a divorce can do. Just a wee bit of stress. 🙂

Anyhow, I’ve gained a few of those lost pounds back. I’m up to 194. So, it’s time to get my lazy butt working out. I’m still doing Yoga a few times a week, and doing a 2.5 mile walk most nights, but I decided that since I’m going to stay in the Monterey area for the near future, (I turned down a position at Lawrence Livermore National Labs two weeks ago), I might as well try and enjoy what brings all the tourists to the area.

One of my co-workers had a bike for sale, so I picked it up. Here is my new spiffy ride to work.

I must admit I ended up getting a gel seat and bicycle shorts. You wouldn’t believe how hard that seat is after a couple of 6 mile rides. And no, I did NOT get the clown looking spandex bicycle shorts. The ones I picked up look like normal shorts but have the clown spandex on the inside so they don’t show. I’m to darn old to be looking like that.

Here’s the route I normally take too and from work.

I start from home, go down through the Pacific Grove Golf Course, wander down Ocean Avenue to Lovers Point, get onto the bike trail and follow it past Cannery Row, past Fisherman’s Warf, along the beach and into the Eucalyptus trees in front of the Naval Postgraduate School, turn up the hill past Bi-Rite, with some of the best sandwiches in Monterey, past the Monterey Fairgrounds and to work.

A few of the views I see along the way.

We decided to get out of the house on a sunny Sunday afternoon and have a bit of BBQ up in Castroville.

A month or so ago my neighbor was having some plumbing problems with her house. Her brother tried to help and things got worse. So, she had our land lady call a plumber to come in and work on it. Well, they tried cleaning things out via the vent pipe on the roof and ended up knocking the pipe loose underground.

They dug up the pipe, saw it was the  incorrect type for today’s code, and stopped all work. Told my land lady that they would charge a ton of money to dig the pipe up and replace it. That they wouldn’t touch it until she agreed to that. Leaving the pipe broken during this decision making process.

The good and the bad with this. Yes, the pipe is the wrong type. It’s old corrugated french drain style pipe and not the correct kind. However, it’s been in the ground working for over 40 years before the  “plumber” broke it loose.

So I put the pipe back together temporarily, made sure everything still worked okay, then this last weekend I dug up the old pipe and installed the new “proper” modern style sewer lines. Believe me, there was a lot of sweating involved in this procedure. It really felt good to do something helpful though.

Here is the old pipe.

In the process I ran across this little guy. At first I thought it was a worm, then a snake, then I scratched my head a bit and figured “A legless lizard?”. Really?

Turns out, that’s exactly what it was.

Here is a better picture of it and a link to the California Herpetology site for a better description and other pictures. This is the first one I’ve ever seen. Kind of cool really. After taking some pictures of it I put it in with some old wood on the side of the yard. I’m glad it didn’t get hurt when I dug it up.

Cathy made a comment today about how long it has been since I posted anything. She has a point . I haven’t posted much. As some know, the last year or so of my life has been a very interesting one. Today however is a good day.

Gandalf and I are chillin on the porch. It is a lazy Saturday morning. It’s a typical foggy/cloudy Pacific Grove day. The high will be a  scorching 68 or so degrees Fahrenheit.

I’ve spent my morning so far chatting with my friend Marc about his new job down in L.A., with another friend about her plumbing, the girls about everything including being followers of God, on facebook. If your religious, don’t take offense,  or if you do, skip the next few sentences. There is a person that set up a facebook profile called God. He’s pretty darn funny. Posts a lot of hate mail he receives. Has someone photoshop two animals together, or modifies one and calls it “A new creation, what shall we name it?”. It’s pretty funny stuff. So, I follow him on facebook.

The girls are all well. Driving their father crazy. Megan is now working at the local ice cream parlor in P.G. Molly and Nora finish up school this week and may take some classes at the local college over the summer. Not bad for being only 15. I hear Roberta is doing okay. I try not to have much interaction with her. Better for everyone that way.

Well. That’s about a cup of coffee on the porch worth of updates. It’s better than I’ve done in quite some time.

Cheers world.
