Well, it seems Wally is having some steering issues. I’m not sure if I have a knuckle joint going out, a loose bolt, or a failing steeing box, but there is suddenly a flat spot in the steering (dead center) and a crunch when I turn the wheel while driving slowly.
So, this weekend it looks like I will have to disassemble my steering system. If it’s not one thing it’s another with this car. On the plus side I adjusted all the brakes while I had the car in the air yesterday trying to figure out what was making the crunchy noise. So, at least the brakes are good.
Part of the down side to the steering system of a superbeetle is that you have to remove the fuel tank to get to anything. So that should be fun.
Well, as long as I don’t lose the steering completely on the way home at 65 over the next few nights and die in a fiery crash, I have a project for this weekend.

sounds like your rack bushings are dried up and disintegrating… I’m assuming when you say “flat spot” is the steering floats a bit when you have the wheels at dead center… eg, turn the wheel slightly and nothing happens?

Consider Messing About With Cars as an antidote to the nerdiness involved in Messing About With Computers.
(20 points if you recognize the literary allusion. Then subtract them again because of the geekiness involved in Messing About With Books…)
